ESL STAGE 1
English as a Second Language may be undertaken as a 10-credit subject or a 20-credit subject at Stage 1, and as a 20-credit subject at Stage 2. Students who complete 20 credits of Stage 1 or Stage 2 English as a Second Language with a C grade or better will meet the literacy requirement of the SACE

The aim of the SACE is to develop well-rounded, capable young people who can make the most of their potential. The capabilities include the knowledge and skills essential for people to act in effective and successful ways.

In English as a Second Language students engage with, and reflect on, the ways in which texts are created within contexts for specific purposes and audiences.
Numeracy in English as a Second Language In English as a Second Language students develop confidence and competence with space, number, data, and measurement as they locate and select information to respond to and develop coherent texts.
Learning Requirements
The learning requirements summarise the knowledge, skills, and understanding that students are expected to develop and demonstrate through their learning.
In this subject, students are expected to: 1.know and understand aspects of the relationship between contexts and texts 2.use reading and viewing, listening and speaking, and writing and composing to create and engage effectively with a range of texts 3.locate, record, analyse, and combine information and opinions from a range of written, oral, visual, and multimedia texts 4.use a range of language strategies to convey ideas and opinions appropriate for a variety of purposes and contexts 5.exchange opinions and convey information and experiences through writing and speaking in familiar and unfamiliar situations and contexts. ASSESSMENT SCOPE AND REQUIREMENTS
Assessment at Stage 1 is school based.
10-credit subject
students should provide evidence of learning through four to five assessments.
Students complete at least one assessment from each assessment type.
Each assessment type should have a weighting of at least 20%.
20-credit subject
students should provide evidence of learning through eight to ten assessments.
Students complete at least one assessment from each assessment type.

Assessment Type 1: Text Production
Oral Text Production
Students present a talk in which they convey information and express their opinion on a current issue or a topic of personal interest An oral production should be a maximum of 6 minutes.
Written Text Production
Students write a response in prose to an issue raised in one or more texts that they have read, viewed, or listened to. The response could be in the form of an essay (exposition, discussion, or explanation), a narrative, a report, a letter, a description, a reflection, or a journal entry. maximum of 500 words
Assessment Type 2: Language Application.
Students are required to complete a language application. In this assessment type students complete either an investigation (Option 1) or a communication study (Option 2).
Option 1: Investigation
The investigation is in two parts: an oral activity, which consists of an interview and an oral presentation, and a written activity, which consists of notes and a presentation.
Oral Activity
§Interview §Oral Presentation Students reflect on and evaluate the interview and the processes used, and then answer questions. The oral presentation should be a maximum of 6 minutes.
Written Activity
Students conduct research on a topic related to the interview in the preceding oral activity.
The written activity includes: (report, explanation, or exposition, depending on the nature of the research undertaken).
